RTL Today - Luxembourg: Housing prices on the rise despite Covid crisis

Author: Maurice Fick (5minutes)|Update: 08.04.2021 14:49 © RTL Prices on the Luxembourg housing market have increased by almost 17% in the last year alone, according to a Statec report published this week. The average house in the Grand Duchy costs a whopping 1.3 million euros. The drop in the housing market in spring 2019 has long been consigned to the past, according to Statec. While the health crisis has impacted the majority of business sectors, the real estate market is thriving. Older houses in particular remain sought after in Luxembourg, with their prices skyrocketing by 19.7% in 2020 s fourth quarter, compared to the same period in 2019.

Data lacking on empty homes - Delano - Luxembourg in English

There is no centralised register of real estate sitting empty in Luxembourg even though communes are allowed to tax vacant property, housing minister Henri Kox has said in answer to a parliamentary question.  Luxembourg faces a housing crisis, with the latest data by statistics office Statec showing prices rose a staggering 16.7% in the last quarter of 2020 compared to the year before. Protesters last weekend staged a march in the capital demanding affordable housing. One of the reasons for the crisis is a gap between supply and demand, which activists say is exacerbated by owners sitting on empty property, both buildable land and homes.
