Red squirrel groups urged to nominate their volunteer of the year
The Red Squirrel Survival Trust is calling on Cumbria’s red squirrel conservation groups to nominate their volunteer of the year.
To mark Volunteers Week, which runs from June 1 to June 7, The Red Squirrel Survival Trust has launched a new accolade to reward those who work to ensure the future of the UK’s native red squirrel.
The Volunteer of the Year Award has been created specifically for volunteer groups across the UK, to nominate an individual who demonstrates outstanding dedication and effectiveness in their work to protect our endangered native species, the red squirrel.

The UK government has given its support to a project to use oral contraceptives to control grey squirrel populations.
Environment minister Lord Goldsmith says the damage they and other invasive species do to the UK s woodlands costs the UK economy £1.8 billion a year.
The bizarre-sounding plan is to lure grey squirrels into feeding boxes only they can access with little pots containing hazelnut spread.
These would be spiked with an oral contraceptive.
Lord Goldsmith says the damage from squirrels also threatens the effectiveness of government efforts to tackle climate change by planting tens of thousands of acres of new woodlands.

Prince Charles takes enormous pleasure in finding squirrels in his house.
The 72-year-old royal has marked Red Squirrel Appreciation Day with a letter of support to the Red Squirrel Survival Trust- of which he is patron - and as well as expressing his admiration for the efforts of volunteers in fighting for the survival of the charming and intelligent creatures, he also spoke of his own love of the animals.
He wrote: Without your efforts, we simply could not hope to succeed in the task we have set ourselves.
