are that teachers are a very big part of that demographic. in fact, right here we re at the state capitol in arizona. the last time we were here was back in april. this whole area was filled with teachers. it was basically a sea of red, red for ed, and that was the issue that got a lot of teachers, a lot of millennials mobilized and energized and out there can vavassing for votes. now the question are the youth going to show up to vote, sfees especially after a very big controversial decision. it was the red crashing into the capitol that caught everybody s attention. but this was a different kind of red. in april we watched as tens of thousands of educators marched, demanding more funding for the classrooms and singing about coming back to vote. we will be back to vote in
signatures that red for ed gathered to get a referendum on investing in education on the ballot. it felt like the ball was in our court. reporter: before the mid terms, a bombshell, their referendum was booted off the ballot. we spent these three months sui sweating our lives away and it was like a little press release on twitter. it feels like the voice of the people isn t being heard. are you worried this thing you fought so hard to get on the ballot, now that it s not on the ballot that people will not show up and vote. i m worried about people being apathetic. the story line goes, we had tens of thousands of people fighting hard in april. we had lots of people out collecting signatures all summer and it s like all those things didn t lead us anywhere. i know a lot of people have a lot of apathy. reporter: it s apathy and
we just can t trust him. and then in colorado today, again for the second day, educators engaged in a similar walkout and they are asking for more money for schools. they also want the state to freeze the corporate tax breaks that it has passed until funding is restored. colorado and arizona are the fourth and fifth states to rise up in a teacher s protest movement, red for ed, that is currently sweeping the nation. you ll remember, west virginia teachers walked out last month. then educators in oklahoma and kentucky, and the demands across all states have been remarkably similar. higher pay, but also crucially, higher spending on kids education. this is not what i expected my legislators. and i helped to elect these legislators. this is not what i expected them to do when we voted to fund education. so that classrooms don t have computers and they don t have basic science textbooks. what the heck is this about? having a science textbook is not a partisan issue.
