WaveTrackR data records strong start to 2021
It hasn’t been the easiest start to the year we were all led to believe would be better than 2020
A sharp rise in cases led to a third lockdown being imposed on January 6th, schools shutting and swathes of businesses forced to close their doors again to meet restrictions. However, this doesn’t seem to have crushed business confidence. WaveTrackR’s January data report has revealed that the jobs market has experienced a surge of activity, hitting the ground running as we forge ahead into 2021. Jobs are 99% higher than the average for 2020 and 4% higher than December’s average. Applications, too, are up: 82% higher than the 2020 average and 23% higher than the average for December. It’s a strong start to the year and a good indicator of business confidence.

WaveTrackR December data reveals stable job and applications figures
Even as the year was closing - when the trend is for jobs and applications to drop significantly - both jobs and applications registered some of the best values of 2020, at 27% above the January-March average and +64% respectively.
It is fast becoming clear that the start of 2021 will be far from the recovery period we had all once hoped it would be, which makes December’s WaveTrackR data all the more encouraging. Even as the year was closing - when the trend is for jobs and applications to drop significantly - both jobs and applications registered some of the best values of 2020, at 27% above the January-March average and +64% respectively. Whether that’s due to the imminent rollout of the vaccination programme boosting business and consumer confidence, or the end of the second lockdown at the beginning of the month prompting consumer spend and renewed optimis

WaveTrackR November data reveals decelerating applications and jobs
We have grown used to soaring applications across many industries but WaveTrackR data collected in November reveals that applications decreased by over 40% from October.
Jobs, too, have dipped, though by a far less sizeable 9%. It is not wholly unexpected - this follows a seasonal trend of a winding down of recruitment activity as the year wanes - but the magnitude by which applications have dropped required further investigation. The extension of the furlough scheme, job seekers taking time out to retrain or to form new businesses, and sheer job search fatigue are likely all factors in the fall in applications. The important point to note is that both jobs and applications remain higher than in the early months of the year prior to the first lockdown.
