drive wages up. we had a great jobs report last week with about 20% more jobs than expected by the analysts. but wage growth has been stagnant. what we need is, you know, a little pressure on wages. economic growth will do that. so that s what tax reform is really about, is economic growth. and economic growth can help solve a lot of our other fiscal problems in this country. eddie? when you look at that poll data, it s interesting. in terms of the decline. you guys are getting hit among white women and among millennials. how do you grapple or tackle the issue that the republican party is simply the party of old white men? let me be more specific. old rich white men? how do you tackle that in the 18 part of it is our recruiting candidates. our recruiting chair from upstate new york. eddie edwards out of new hampshire, navy veteran, former
in 2005 and what it told about 2006, and are we going to see that repeat itself in 2018? you have a lot of similarities. you have the two governorships in 2005, you know, go to the democrats. in large part because president bush s popularity was really waning. you had centrist voters that wanted to send a message to the white house. you had a lot of excitement in the democratic ranks and fund-raising was up and they were recruiting candidates for 2006, and they were polling and it indicated they preferred democrats to control congress. a lot of what is happening today was happening then. the question is what does the environment look like this time next year? politics move so quickly. now moving towards 2018, democrats do seem to be in a strong place. we don t know what will change.
think the danger of overstating the degree to which this was only about donald trump and therefore the lessons are all about the degree to which candidates and parties either oppose or embrace donald trump. one interesting thing, about the virginia election, not just the governors race but the state legislative elections. there was a huge amount of outside money, outside groups, and a lot of silicon valley involvement. ways of recruiting candidates, turning out the vote and dicing campaigns. it worked pretty well. i think that should really ring alarm bells not necessarily for the white house but for the rnc in terms of being outpaced organizationally. the success was proven in virginia. it s going to be rolled out across the country from 2018 and particularly for the state legislature elections in 2020 which whoever controls those shapes the districts for the subsequent decade.
starts. i m saying it very calmly. you look at the trend, it is unmistakable coming up, should democrats be scared? hold on, i got to say one thing, guy, one thing, though, this is where it s important. i m so sorry to interrupt, but here s the difference between the united states and china. here s the difference between the united states and turkey, here s the difference between the united states and the philippines. right now people watching this show have the ability to start organizing and they have the ability to start recruiting candidates and they have the ability to put candidates up, to run for election, whether they re republicans or independents or democrats, who say no to donald trump s view of the constitution and who says no to his praising of autocrats and tyrants aacross the gobi. that s what we can celebrate it s so depressing.
see bannon and the trump-styled candidates, those sorts of people filling this growing vacuum, and the old republican party, the gop, you know, that may be a thing of the past. heidi, about the party, do you see this i heard a lot of commentary today that this party is splitting in half. i think that we are not going to see this happen. i think it will happen, but i think we re not going to see it happen until the tax cut experiment is completed. and then i think you re definitely going to see bannon fulfill his promise of recruiting candidates to try and take out not only additional senators like jeff flake, but also the leadership. i mean, he has people like roy moore say publicly that it is going to be their goal to take out senator mitch mcconnell when they get there. so, i think that he is claiming victory, whether that is appropriate or not in terms of his role of these, quote-unquote, scalpings. he s nevertheless using it to
