Watertown readies for Concert in the Park

Unless the rain gets in the way. City officials say everything is all set for the July Fourth Concert in Thompson Park. City Manager Kenneth A. Mix said the fireworks show will be bigger than in past years after COVID-19 knocked out the annual Fourth of July program last year. But the program is back on after the year hiatus. “It’s our way for us to get back to normal,” Mr. Mix said, adding that the concert will be “very similar” to what was held before the pandemic. Now that the state is back in business, concert-goers who have been vaccinated will not have to worry about wearing masks, while those who have not received vaccinations must wear facial coverings. The city is going by the honor system and won’t require proof of vaccines.

Watertown City Council considers food truck events at Thompson Park

WATERTOWN — City Councilwoman Sarah V. Compo sees how popular Food Truck Fridays are in Lowville, and she thinks they also could be a hit in Thompson Park. Recently, she talked to Kylie S. Peck, chief executive officer of the Greater Watertown-North Country Chamber of Commerce, and Michelle L. Capone, director of regional development for the Development Authority of New York, about starting up some kind of food truck events at the city-owned park this summer. The councilwoman brought up the subject at Monday night’s City Council meeting to get input from her colleagues on council about the idea. She suggested it could start as a pilot program to see how it would be received by park-goers.

Watertown fairgrounds pool will stay closed this summer

WATERTOWN — Residents will have to wait until next summer to go for a swim in the Alteri pool at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Councilwoman Lisa A. Ruggiero had hoped the Steve D. Alteri Municipal Swimming Pool would reopen after a year’s absence caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic but found out at Monday night’s City Council meeting that some of the work cannot get done. “I just think we should see how soon we can do it,” she said. But on Monday night, they learned getting repairs done for the summer season could not be done in time to open it. They plan to reopen it next summer now, City Manager Kenneth A. Mix said.
