While there would be targeted funding for particular groups through the Community Investment Fund, council has also advocated for a community-led approach – working with other agencies and using its platform to leverage other external funding. The plan was developed in a series of workshops between May and August, with feedback given from key agencies and community groups. Social isolation and loneliness was an issue identified as affecting a large amount of people in Nelson, with older adults, young people, new migrants/arrivals and the LGBTQI+ community being particularly at risk. Housing vulnerability was “a growing area of concern”, with increasing levels of homelessness – as well as people at risk of becoming homeless or living in substandard housing.
