Authorities have confirmed Australia s first case of the Lambda strain of the coronavirus.
The variant is believed to be more transmissible than the Alpha and Gamma strains and is feared to be worse than the Delta one that has been wreaking havoc across Australia.
According to national genomics database AusTrakka, a returned traveller who was in hotel quarantine in New South Wales tested positive for the variant in April.
It s the first time the strain has been detected on our shores.

Lambda was originally called C.37 and was first detected in Peru in December. It s since gone on to account for 80 per cent of the country s cases in April and May and there are fears it could be resistant to at least one vaccine.
