Sager, who owns the All Nations Driving Academy in Terrace, had been teaching the woman how to drive. For the mother, completing treatment and getting a driver’s licence were steps that would show child welfare workers she was determined to be what they deemed a good mom.
While the woman originally planned to take the Northern Health medical bus, stay in a shelter, then take another bus to her ultimate destination for recovery support, Sager knew that wouldn’t be safe. The route travels Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert, and is known as the Highway of Tears for how many women have gone missing and murdered on it.

Prince Albert’s River Street will be the first location named under the City’s Indigenous Naming Initiative. Signs will be installed on River Street at 1st Ave West, 1st Ave East and 6th Ave East, translated in the City’s six Indigenous languages: Plains Cree, Swampy Cree, Woodland Cree, Dakota, Dene and Métis.
The project is part of the City’s Municipal Cultural Action Plan (MCAP) and approved by City Council following recommendations from the Historical Society’s First Nation and Metis Knowledge Keeper Committee.
EDMONTON For the first time, the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) will have an Indigenous Elder in Residence to help build community relationships and offer access to Indigenous knowledge. Elder Jo-Ann Saddleback from the Saddle Lake Cree First Nation will maintain a one-year residence at the Stanley A. Milner Library. The program will help to bridge the relationship with the Edmonton Public Library and the City of Edmonton Indigenous Framework development. It aims to connect Edmonton’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities by offering access to Indigenous knowledge and opening up a space where visitors can share meaningful dialogue around reconciliation.
“We need to build new ways and initiatives that deal with and confront gender-based violence, while also empowering women, girls, and 2SlGBTQQIA+ people,” said MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “It is important that we show leadership by engaging men and boys to take an active part in preventing and eliminating gender-based violence.” Land-based cultural programming will be used to help develop tools for men and boys to truly understand the impact of violent actions on themselves, their victims and their communities, MKO says. “This project is very important as it will be Indigenous-led through its development and implementation at the community level,” said MMIWG liaison unit manager Hilda Anderson-Pyrz. “One of the key outcomes is to enhance the safety and well-being of First Nations women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people through the direct inclusion of men and boys as being part of the solution on ending gender-based violence.”

Nisga’a scholar launches new Centre for Indigenous Fisheries at UBC
A new Centre for Indigenous Fisheries (CIF) is being launched at University of British Columbia, with Indigenous fisheries scientist, conservation biologist and Nisga’a Nation member Dr. Andrea Reid joining as Principal Investigator.
The CIF, which will be based at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, aims to support the management of aquatic ecosystems and fisheries in Canada and beyond by combining Indigenous knowledge systems and modern science. Professor Emerita and fisheries historian Dr. Dianne Newell will serve as the Interim Director, and a second faculty appointment is anticipated for the near future.
