Democracy implies first of all civic equality. In a democracy, all citizens are subject to the same laws and are distinguished from one another only by their merit. Poverty should therefore not prevent anyone from taking part in the life of the city. The aim is not to ensure the same resources for all citizens but to guarantee the equality of all before the law through the impartiality of justice. This is what we call the rule of law.
Indeed, Mr. Ergodan, who recognizes Ukraine’s territorial integrity but refuses to endorse sanctions on Russia, is seen by many as one of a handful of global leaders who could actually broker peace between the two neighbours.
