Jasper County foundation receives funds for tutoring A local foundation is helping students with their school assignments thanks to a grant it recently received. The Legacy Foundation of South Carolina, a nonprofit working in Jasper County, was awarded $4,800 by the Lowcountry Community COVID-19 Response Fund to assist third- through sixth-grade students with an online tutoring program for eight weeks. It is working with the Jasper County School District to provide tutoring for 40 students. We felt these funds will help us meet the families and students where they were, as they are in the midst of this pandemic, said Maurice Lawyer, the foundation’s chief operating officer.

Spokesperson Travis Washington said the district will continue with online-only classes for two extra weeks because of an uptick in COVID-19 cases in the county. The district originally planned to resume in-person classes Jan. 20 for students who selected the hybrid model. “Near the end of the two extended weeks of full virtual learning, we will consult with our medical professionals and administration to review the Jasper County Covid-19 data,” a district news release said. “We will then decide when it is safe to return to in-person learning.”
