Rebuilding Florida Keys is a slow process

A state program set up in 2018 to help people whose homes were damaged or destroyed in Hurricane Irma in 2017 has been plagued by delays and has only completed one project in the Florida Keys to date. The state Department of Economic Opportunity launched the Rebuild Florida program in September 2018 to help workers and their families rebuild their homes after Hurricane Irma. The program is designed to pay for significant repairs of homes for people who did not have insurance or enough insurance, did not receive federal disaster funding and do not have the funds to complete work on their homes.

(WTXL) — Millions of dollars are coming to Tallahassee Community College to help with the ongoing Hurricane Michael disaster recovery. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity awarded $4.7 million between TCC and Chipola College in Marianna. The Rebuild Florida grant will support construction trades, including HVAC programs, carpentry, and welding. TCC Vice President for Workforce Development Kim Moore said since the hurricane, there is a dire need for that workforce.

DeSantis visits Panama City Florida, announces hurricane recovery aid

The waiver will mean about $17 million in savings for Bay County. In taking this action, the state will be covering part or all of the federal aid match requirements for local governments which have taken fiscal hits because of the hurricane.  DeSantis said that since he took office in January 2019, Hurricane Michael recovery has been a priority for him. He has made several visits during the past couple of years to announce recovery aid. We knew when I came into office in January of 2019, this was a long-term effort,  DeSantis said. We let the people of Northwest Florida know that we understand that this is going to be a long-term effort.
