The performers at this year’s Aug. 24 event at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay will all be making their San Diego Music Awards debuts. They include Electric Mud, Brisa Lauren, Marujah, Chickenbone Slim and The Biscuits, The Frets and Ed Kornhauser.
“I’m looking at our August event as a reopening of the local music scene, so I really wanted to book artists who haven’t performed before,” Hellman told the Union-Tribune Tuesday.

“That doesn’t mean I didn’t make calls to Jason Mraz and Switchfoot. But they both hope to be out touring again in August, so it works out even better making this a live and local event. This will be the first get-together with many of our local musicians in one spot in quite a long time.”

Somewhere Over the Border, a musical set in the ‘70s that uses fable and family history to explore a young girl’s pursuit of the American dream. Written by Brian Quijada, a self-taught playwright with Salvadoran roots, the musical includes diverse genres from cumbia to hip-hop and addresses identity, immigration, the Latinx-American experience, and the human condition. Online viewing through Arizona Theatre Company starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, and ends on Sunday, May 8.

As if San Diego needed any more confirmation there are currently more than 100 live shows on the local concert calendar the organizers of the San Diego Music Awards have announced a date and location for the 2021 gala / soiree / bash / party / adult-beverage get together.
Showtime for the 30th incarnation of the SDMAs is 7 p.m sharp on Aug. 24. The event will return this year to Humphrey s By the Bay, which has lots of holes on its schedule this summer, due to COVID-19. Yes, that s a Tuesday, but with an August show, rain-or-shine doesn t need to be said.

It remains to be seen if indoor and outdoor concerts in San Diego and throughout California will be able to resume without any restrictions on June 15, contingent on the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations at the time and the amount of available vaccines.
Nevertheless, several San Diego concert presenters announced Monday that they are gearing up for renewed activity.
Humphreys Concerts by the Bay confirmed its first booking of 2021 a pair of Aug. 17 and 18 standing-room-only shows by the Philadelphia folk-rock band Mt. Joy and the bluegrass-fueled Minnesota group Trampled By Turtles. Tickets go on sale this week for the concerts at the 1,450-capacity Shelter Island venue, whose 40th anniversary last year was pushed back to 2021 because of the pandemic.
