Herefordshire public health speaks out after Covid cases spike

HEREFORDSHIRE S public health team has spoken out after one area of the county has seen a huge spike in coronavirus cases.

From Maylord s loos to libraries: what s reopening in Herefordshire today

HEALTH chiefs in Herefordshire are urging caution as lockdown restrictions are eased in the county. A range of well-known retailers and much-loved independent businesses are reopening in Hereford and the market towns today (April 12). The Maylord Orchards toilet facilities will also be available to shoppers. Hereford, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye libraries will open from April 12 for browsing, choosing books and pre-booked computer sessions, with Ledbury library reopening the following Monday (April 19). Library click and collect services will continue in the meantime, with preparations being made to reopen remaining libraries in May. Customers will be required to wear face coverings when visiting the library, unless they are exempt.

The age group with the highest Covid rate in Herefordshire

The difference in the data shows how the rates have been falling over the last four weeks. The worst affected age group is those over-90. The infection rate has fallen to 168.6 from 379.4, but still remains the highest of all groups. The 85 to 89, 35 to 39, and 25 to 29 age groups also have rates above 80 cases per 100,000 people, but all have fallen over the last month. Speaking in January, Herefordshire s acting director of public health Rebecca Howell-Jones said the high rates among the over-90s was due to care home outbreaks. At the time she didn t comment on how many cases there had been, or at which care homes.

Work to prevent coronavirus outbreaks at Herefordshire farms

PUBLIC health experts in Herefordshire have been quizzed on what is being done to prevent another coronavirus outbreak amongst seasonal workers at farms in Herefordshire. In July 2020, more than 130 workers at a vegetable farm near Ledbury tested positive for coronavirus. Public Health England said the outbreak at AS Green and Co in Mathon was the first outbreak of its kind in the UK. The outbreak was successfully contained, health officials said in August, and work has been ongoing to prevent a similar incident at any of the other farms in the county which use seasonal workers. Herefordshire s public health chief Rebecca Howell-Jones was asked during a Herefordshire Healthwatch Q&A what was being done to prevent a repeat of July s event, which attracted widespread national media coverage.
