MCSD works to prevent student injuries | News, Sports, Jobs

ethompson@lewistownsentinel.com LEWISTOWN An incident that occurred Thursday morning prompted administrators at Mifflin County School District to be proactive in preventing student and staff injuries. Chief Operations Officer Vance Varner described to the district’s board of directors, during its regular voting meeting, an incident that occurred on a school bus in which an elementary student was taken to the hospital after a fire extinguisher was accidentally engaged and emptied. After emergency crews arrived on scene, they found the pin of the fire extinguisher had wiggled loose and that the extinguisher did not have a plastic retaining strap to hold the pin in place.

Mifflin County School District’s Chief Academic Officer Kevin O’Donnell explained to the district’s board of directors during its meeting held via Zoom call on Thursday, that students in grades 8 to 11 will be able to access registration night online through the school district’s web page, www.mcsdk12.org O’Donnell announced that kindergarten registration was also underway. Commissioners approve hospitality fund contract | News, Sports, Jobs

bcox@lewistownsentinel.com LEWISTOWN – A grant program aimed at providing much-needed financial help to the hospitality industry that has been hit hard by COVID-19 is soon coming to Mifflin County. The Mifflin County Commissioners on Thursday approved a contract for CHRP (which stands for COVID-19 Hospitality Relief Program) after hearing from county planning director Mark Colussy about the program and the speed with which it has come into being. “For how important this is to get the money in the hands of the hospitality industry, which is specifically for hospitality businesses, lodging and restaurants, I was very impressed with how the state was able to fast-forward all of this as well as the commissioners to have this moving forward,” Colussy said.
