Big box and mall anchor stores leave quite a footprint when they go belly-up in a world evermore reliant on online shopping.
“The Amazon effect was already a trend ten years ago,” said Ben Call, a commercial real estate specialist and partner with the Real Estate Group in Springfield. Call said the trend with large malls and strip malls alike is toward repurposing – something that’s easier to accomplish in smaller spaces.
“Dark space, obviously, is what no landlord wants. When it just sits there vacant, it’s making nobody any money but you’re still incurring the same expense.”
