Revealed: 584 sites similar to Stonehaven inspected by Network Rail
Network Rail has released details of over 500 places on the network with similar characteristics to the site of the fatal Stonehaven derailment, along with the specifics of maintenance work carried out at six of these locations.
Network Rail’s interim report on the derailment – published in September last year following the August 2020 incident – said that the rail operator had identified 584 sites sharing “some characteristics of the Carmont location”.
The report added that while inspections of the 584 sites did not identify “any significant issues requiring emergency intervention”, defects requiring action “sooner than originally planned” were identified at around 1% of sites (a total of six).
