aerial information saying the cooling of the overheated spent fuel pools is having little effect, meaning the water drops in the water cannons not doing the job at this point. reactor number three is still highly sensitive and the fuel pool is believed to be dangerously low. the japanese and u.s. governments have had different ways to deal with radiation fears, but now a team of specialists is headed to japan. they re going to give their best advice on manning the situation. chris lawrence with more on this operation and how they re trying to help. hey, chris. hey, kiran. hey, christine. this is a very special nine-man team. they re specialists in dealing with the consequences of radiation fallout. and basically, they ve been dispatched to japan to go through some of the consequences of what could happen if there is, say, a massive leak of radiation into that area. talking to the military commanders there about what they would do about decontamination, about evacuations, about tr
daiichi plant have been caused by a loss of power. power to fuel the cooling systems to keep the radioactive material there cool and safe. they have now partially reinstated electrical power to the plant. this is good news. authorities say they have been able to run a power line powered by the external electrical grid to reactor number 2. reactor number 2 is the one that doesn t look as bad as the others here. with electricity they should be able to power pumps and anything else that is still functional on site for delivering cooling capacity both to the reactors and to the spent fuel pools. the real question is with all of the damage that was done when they didn t have power, with all of the explosions and everything else, are there enough intact systems still on site that there is anything functional to plug in to that blessed new power line? that s next. in your house. you need a hoveround power chair. i m tom kruse, inventor of the hoveround. you ll be able to go to the mall!
they evidently were some of them may have been damaged, or i heard reports they were damaged in the earthquake. and so we ll have to see how this pulls together. but it s definitely an improvement. the water spray hasn t it s a little iffy. i mean, the satellite photos of reactor number 3 show the steam plumes coming up, and people worry that that s the steam coming off the spent fuel pond, meaning that the water s boiling. and so it doesn t look from the satellite images and again, there s a you only get those once a day. it doesn t look like there s been much progress at cooling down those that particular spent fuel pond. the first readings of american data collection in flights over fukushima seem to indicate that the worst of the contamination has not gone beyond an 18-mile radius, but what do you think the real danger zone is there? well, i don t think it s really known. i mean, the radiation
