the trump/desantis battle evolved into a schoolyard brawl. you don t change your name in the middle of the election. his whole family moved to florida under my governorship. are you kidding me? what is the desantis plan to convince voters he s not just a better nominee but a better president. plus the gop field keeps growing. three more candidates will jump in this week including trump s former vp. republicans have to offer a positive vision grounded in conservative principles. but how many of them will make it to the republican debate stage? and disaster averted. no one got everything wanted but the american people got what they needed. the president said it is proof his brand of politics still works. i know bipartisanship is hard but we could never stop trying. welcome to inside politics sunday , i m abby phillip. thank you for joining. it is all about iowa, iowa. and yesterday marks the first start of the caucus season with eight presidential hopefuls
pass border is constant, over the last few hours we have seen how group after group of migrants get here, and that doesn t stop at night, either, after the immigrants surrender to u.s. border patrol agents at the border, they are brought here to this holding area behind me, where they have to wait to be processed. just yesterday customs and border protection released the numbers of what they call encounters with immigrants with border patrol agents. for the month of november, there were 191,113 apprehensions along the border, and that number rises to more than 242,000, nearly a quarter of a million people, if we add those who seek asylum at ports of entry. as high as those numbers seem, officials say they re lower as compared to the same period last year. congressman tony gonzalez, a republican who represents two-thirds of the texas border with mexico says, help from the federal government here at the border is desperately needed, especially considering that those in charge o
i know bipartisanship is hard. and unity is hard. but we could never stop trying. because in moments like this one, the ones we just faced, where the american economy and the world economy is at risk of collapsing, there is no other way no matter how tough our politics gets, we see each other not as adversaries but as fellow americans. and in some ways this is not surprising at all. you could even look at that oval office address as the real start of his 2024 campaign. i think it is. and it is quite a journey from months of we ll not negotiate over the budget to let s do an oval office address to tout this bill in which we agreed to republican spending caps, we agreed to work requirements. only point is come prom isz and it is being the grown-up and that is the a pillar of his re-election argument. but this was a fairly
democratic vote and then also when you re thinking about confirmation of judges. president biden being able to move his appointees through, that helps as well. but also i think it s important for the state of georgia. you know, senator warnock and herschel walker have been running their campaigns very differently. they re very different candidates. and really key to senator warnock s re-election argument is that he is willing to work with republicans, right? we are living in a very polarizing time, and we don t hear that a lot. we don t hear candidates center as core to their re-election argument that they want to work with the other party. and so does this work? is he successful? is he able to peel off independents and moderates with this election argument? i think that is a big test. what s interesting too if you really want to get great insight into joe biden, what does joe biden think, who is joe biden, he was asked this question
so, walker had said he wanted to just win outright. he clearly didn t and is going into this runoff behind. he is. he is. and i think that democrats are obviously thrilled they held on to the senate, but this is still an important race, they will not have to be if senator warnock is able to pull off a victory, they won t be at the whims of seminar manchin and sinema as much. a huge thing for a lot of democrats. it also is a test of senator warnock s brand of politics. you very it is infrequent that you see candidates being loud and proud about their willingness to work with the other party. especially in an environment that is so polarized. and that has been key to his re-election argument. that he is willing to work with ted cruz, with tommy tuberville. does that work in georgia where democrats did not do well. stacy and ramey abrams lost. senator warnock is georgia democrats last hope. i just think we should talk
