The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will discuss challenges and opportunities related to overall port congestion, with a special emphasis on agricultural exports, at its meeting this week.
The Board will hear from port officials and agricultural stakeholders as well as trucking, maritime and retail industry representatives. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. via GoToWebinar.
“As we continue to experience congestion and delays at California ports, we need to look at collaborative solutions, ” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “All parties, including agriculture, port authorities, shipping lines, trucking companies and others share a commitment to expand trade by moving products efficiently and effectively through a robust goods movement infrastructure. Collectively, I believe that we can find short and long term opportunities to improve freight transportation.”

Rayne Thompson, a Ripley High School senior, recently won a gold medal in welding sculpture at the West Virginia SkillsUSA competition.
There are a couple of factors that make this accomplishment unique for the Roane-Jackson Technical Center student.
The most obvious is Thompson’s gender. It is still rare for girls to take welding classes at the center.
“I only know of two other females taking welding at the technical center,” said Thompson. “I would love to see more women in the field.”
The second factor was her choice of subject.
“My welding instructor, Robert Greene, thought I was a little crazy when I told him I wanted to make a wedding cake,” Thomason said.

With a motto of ‘Teaching skills for a lifetime,’ the Roane-Jackson Technical Center offers a wide variety of hands-on learning opportunities.
Students from both Roane and Jackson counties join together to acquire skills and develop talents in areas such as auto mechanics, law and public safety, welding, education, carpentry and culinary arts.
Those skills and talents were put on display at the West Virginia SkillsUSA competition on March 26 and 27. This state leadership and skills conference took place virtually.
Monica French, teacher and lead advisor of SkillsUSA, said that over 250 students competed state-wide at this year’s event.
“This was the 55th year for the state Skills competition,” she said. “Even though it was virtual, which was a different kind of experience, the students were excited to take part. Last year, the event was cancelled.”
