The San Antonio Zoo unveiled a memorial plaque in honor of the late Raymond Figueroa, known to generations as the “Elephant Man.”
Figueroa died Dec. 26, 2020. He was 86.
More than 70 of Figueroa’s family, friends, past coworkers and two former zoo directors attended a ceremony Thursday evening at the zoo’s Savannah Rhino Deck. They took turns recalling the lessons they learned from Figueroa’s depth of knowledge about animals.

PORTERVILLE, Calif â The Two Firefighters that died fighting a library fire in February of last year were awarded a Purple Heart in honor of their sacrifice.
According to the California State Firefighters Association the Purple Heart is awarded to individuals that suffer severe physical injury that results in hospitalization or death while performing services as a member of the California fire service.
