COVID-19 VACCINE ROLLOUT BEGINS - GIS Dominica

  The Government of Dominica through the Ministry of Health, Wellness and New Health Investment has begun the implementation of the covid-19 vaccine rollout. On Tuesday, February 8 th 2021, Dominica received 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca from the Government of India in a bid to build immunity against the disease. The vaccine implementation is the next phase in prevention measures and combating the disease. Beginning today, Monday February 22 nd 2021 will commence vaccination of identified priority target groups at the seven health districts. The vaccine will be administered at the Roseau Health Centre, the Grand Bay Health Centre, the St. Joseph Health Centre, the Castle Bruce Health Centre, the Wesley Health Centre, and the Portsmouth Health Centre.

GEOTHERMAL PLANT FOR DOMINICA BY 2022 GEOTHERMAL PLANT FOR DOMINICA BY 2022 Citizens of Dominica will soon reap the benefits of a new geothermal plant expected to be constructed in 2022. This forms part of the Government’s goal of building a climate resilient nation, while seeking to reduce the cost of electricity for consumers and provide electricity to the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique which in turn will encourage foreign exchange The plant will be constructed in the Roseau Valley and is expected to produce approximately 120 megawatts of electricity when completed.  Ambassador to the OAS, His Excellency Dr. Vince Henderson stated that over 25 million dollars have been invested in this project to date. He explained that the Prime Minister has provided some of these funds through the CBI programme while the rest will come from donor agencies.

A contract signing ceremony was held on Friday, January 29, 2021 at the Grand Bay Primary School. Member of Parliament for the Grand Bay Constituency, Hon. Edward Registe stated that this is an investment not only in education but in the alleviation of poverty. “This investment in education is significant and timely as it will enable us to develop more conducive environments for learning and teaching and many other activities that school buildings in Dominica provide. Now it has been said that a sound education is a sure path towards poverty alleviation,” Hon. Registe stated.

Since the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, the Government of Dominica has spent in excess of five point eight million dollars for housing repairs and for the construction of single homes on personal property.  So far, over sixty homes have been given to needy individuals and families around the constituency, with many elderly person benefiting from this housing initiative.

$1.4 MILLION MULTI-PURPOSE INDOOR FACILITY IN MASSACRE NEARING COMPLETION The 1.4 million dollar Massacre Multi-Purpose Indoor Sports Complex, aimed at encouraging sports involvement among the youth is nearing completion. Minister for Sports, Culture and Community Development, Hon. Roselyn Paul explained that the project is expected to be completed by April 2021. “We are here at the Massacre hard-court of which the building itself is almost 95 percent complete and for general works on the project we are about 80 percent complete. We have to install the lights, we have to install the flooring but all of these, including the bleachers, are right here on island so we will expect the complete project by April of this year for use by the public,” Hon. Paul stated.
