or gosh, the people on the other side seem motivated, relentless. i guess they re just going to consolidate power. what s the answer to these questions? i don t have them for you, and i m not going to claim to. they are high pay grade questions and they re questions for the community, not any one person if you believe still in a civic and political community. we bring in now neal katyal, the former acting solicitor general for the obama administration, who is steeped in the constitutional and legal issues here, and who we know also cares a lot about these issues. neal, i serve it up that way as our top story and say we care about it not as a partisan matter but as one about democracy. i m curious you views on just the sheer numbers in the washington post report. i m so glad you started the who this way, because this is such an important issue the all americans. i mean, these maga republicans are like the grownup version of
i m glad that mr. walker and his friend were able to make their own decision about a presidency, but unfortunately he and other republicans now are trying to take that right away from every single american, and i think his story and the comments made by other republican senators just illustrates, this is not the republicans position on abortion, on birth control, it s not about women and children, it is literally about raw political power. and it s frightening. i m out here on the trail. i m in the state of arizona. we now have 17 states that have banned abortion, including the state of arizona now completely. they ve just enacted a law that was written 150 years ago. that means 1.5 million women in this state, a state that had moderate republicans it does have moderate republicans, this is no longer a right in the state of arizona, and women everywhere are terrified. women who have miscarried, who are desperately trying to get
2020 election results. if they are denying about the past while seeking power you can bet they will act on those lies in the future. you can see the quote here from the washington post. they are running in every region of the country and nearly every state. over half, 174, are running for what are called safely republican seats, while another 51 are in tightly contested races. a sobering account from the washington post. the reason those numbers matter is if you follow politics you probably know while we hold these elections across the country, the midterms have every house seat for example up for grabs, the numbers, the way the districts are drawn and other factors mean of the races are all by decided. when they refer to safe seats they re referring to republicans who are vowing in the future to do what they failed to do in the past in some sense, which is act on the lies and say, whether they win or lose, they ll work to keep their party in power. if that lie becomes a government
ousted from republican leadership but losing a primary, ousted from congress, was saying that the insurrection was wrong and shouldn t steal elections. here s what she s saying with a new warning about arizona. for. if you care about democracy and you care about the survival of our republic, then you need to understand, we all have to understand, that we cannot give people power who have told us that they will not honor elections. elections are the foundation of our republic, and peaceful transfers of power are the foundation of our republic. and we must have elected officials in both parties who understand and honor that duty and responsibility. those are facts that she just stated. peaceful transitions of power are the foundations of lawful and peaceful democracies, whatever their other faults.
the truth of the democratic party of today, they will lie, they will cheat, they will steal their way to the top if that s what it takes to gain power and they will do it together with one united voice. take a look at the so-called inflation reduction act or i call it that the tax of the poor come in the middle class and people on fixed income act, all it is is one giant $500 billion force and it does not even attempt to reduce inflation. it will increase inflation. it increases taxes on the poor, middle-class, fixed incomes and drives up everybody s energy cost at a time when gas is still near a record high and has 85 to 857 new agents and small businesses, bigger than three agencies of the government combined. but guess what, of the americans they will now be able to enjoy a big tax credit. if they can buy an expensive new electric vehicle or an ev as they like to call them, every
