cessna eventually crashed near the george washington national forest in virginia. cnn s brian todd is near the site of the crash. he s joining us now. brian, where do things stand with this investigation now? well, kate, we ve got some new information for you this morning. i just spoke to a group of first responders who were the first people on the scene of that plane crash. to give you a sense of what they were up against, i ll take you to my right, your left. you can see how steep the terrain is over here and k you n see the patchy fog that has settled in over that little valley area, that ravine area there. that is what they were up against. that fog was here last night when the first responders got here. what they told us was that they had to leave their vehicles not too far from where i m standing here, just up the road a bit. they left their road at just before 6:00 p.m. eastern time. it then took them two hours, fully two hours to walk into those mountains, in very steep terra
heard about something that happened shortly after claudia and nick started dating. claudia was at his house, and jessica showed up, seeing her vehicle in the driveway area and was very upset, banging on the door, saying, i know she s in there. let me in. reporter: nick had told his brother, john, about the dustup with jessica. and he thought that was, what, amusing, alarming? he s like, man, it s going to be drama. i can already tell. and then a day after nick s murder, john s kids snapped these pictures of a woman poking around nick s house. you are on the phone pretty quick with investigators right? my kids were adamant it was just. a parked outside the house long after the crime. right, the woman pulled in the call the sack, then walked out of her car, and down and alleyway into a ravine area.

the roadways there, should they be traveled at all? i cannot comment on the picture because i m not looking at your live feed right now, but certainly bridges need to be inspe inspected for how the supports under them performed during this event. this was an 8.8 magnitude quake. we mentioned you had been to haiti which had a 7.0 last month on the 12th. the kind of damage we are seeing here though, this is extensive. at least in the more densely populated cities, it doesn t seem to be flattened. when we compare what we saw at haiti is a 7.0 and this exponentially gets more difficult to explain in santiago or concepcion, what is the difference in terms of what you saw in haiti and what we are seeing here? there are two points on this one. in haiti, we did not have building codes that were
the magnitudes on the myriad of aftershocks that are occurring in the region around this particular quake. we expect there to be significant aftershocks. they ll be ongoing for weeks, if not months. that could affect things like some of the rescue and relief efforts, that sort of thing. one of those aftershocks today, randy, registered a 6.9? yes. that in itself is a huge quake. that s correct. and there have been at least five aftershocks greater than magnitude six thus far, and we are getting quite a number of them that are above 5.0. each and every one of those would be felt by the people in that area. randy, is there any silver lining to a quake like this? at least having released whatever pressure it was that was felt between these tectonic
