When the postman handed 24-year-old John Olumide Ogunjemilusi a letter two weeks ago, he didn’t know why the young man was greeting the delivery of post with whoops of joy. He congratulated him anyway.
Inside the envelope was John’s long-awaited certificate of citizenship. Six years after he had applied for it, this slip of paper announcing him as one of the country’s newest citizens was finally in his hand.
Without pomp or ceremony thanks to Covid-19 restrictions, no large-scale ceremonies have taken place in over a year John and his mum Victoria had their own quiet, little celebration.
