Lobos Cruise Over UNLV to Stay Unbeaten

Lobos Cruise Over UNLV to Stay Unbeaten ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. It was billed as a battle of the last two unbeatens in the Mountain West.  Now, UNM not only is the last unbeaten, but they’ve barely been touched.  New Mexico cruised past UNLV 4-0 in just under two hours to take a solitary hold of first place as the last unbeaten team in the Mountain West at 3-0.  UNM now will ready itself for a Sunday senior day match with San Diego State at 1 p.m at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium. The only drawback to Friday’s match is the wind that hit Albuquerque, forcing the match to move indoors.  That meant a loss of fans due to the current state health order.  That would be the only loss incurred on this day.  UNM took a 1-0 lead with a sweep in doubles.  Jake Trondson and Raul Dobai took a 6-3 win on court two, winning the final three games to put UNM a leg up.  The other two courts were battles, with Stepan Holis and Alex Maggs deadlocked at 5-5 while on court 1, UNM’s No. 59 rank

Sunday’s matchup with San Diego State will be senior day as UNM will honor Dominic West, Jake Trondson and Stepan Holis.

Raul Dobai Named MW Player of the Week COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Raul Dobai, who went 3-0 a week ago including a win over the reigning Mountain West Player of the Year, has been named the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.  The award is the first honor of the junior’s career and he is the first Lobo to earn conference Player of the Week honors since Ricky Hernandez Tong, current UNM Assistant Coach, was honored on April 17, 2019. Dobai, a junior who could play for two more seasons, led UNM to a 4-1 conference opening win over Fresno State with a pair of wins.  He took a 6-2 decision at No. 2 doubles, teaming with Jake Trondson.  The Lobo tandem won the final six games after starting out down 2-0.  In singles, he made it a 3-0 game with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.  That win came over the 2019 MW Player of the Year Zdenek Derkas, and he fought back from a 5-3 deficit in the first set.  He finished that match winning 10 of the final 13 games.
