If i had my foot in the iron and fell backwards and right, id get my toes caught like that and then be dragged, which is, you know, a pretty horrific experience. It took this device, called a toe stopper, to allow him to race. It means you physically cant get stuck in the iron. My foot is all the way in it. If i fall, you slide along the top and you would come out. Yeah, so far so good, it works really effectively.
