38 DSA cases filed in three months

In the first three months of this year, 38 cases were filed under the Digital Security Act against individuals exercising their right to freedom of expression.
At least five journalists were among those charged in the cases, revealed Article 19, a British organisation that promotes the right to freedom of speech, yesterday. We are extremely concerned to see the number of cases and arrests made against those who were publishing news or expressing their opinions about corruption or ethical violations, said Article 19.
Recently, there have been allegations against a ruling party parliamentarian for vandalising the office of Amar Habiganj newspaper, stated Article 19.

The mayor of Rangpur city corporation (RCC) has sued a TV journalist in the district under Digital Security Act (DSA) for remarks against him on social media.
Mostafizar Rahman, the mayor of RCC, filed the case under DSA with Kotwali Police station last night accusing Ratan Sarkar, a correspondent of Somoy Television, a private television channel in the country.
The case was filed under section of 25(2), 29(1), and 31 (1 and 2), Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Abdur Rashid confirmed the matter.
Two days ago, Ratan Sarkar posted a status on his Facebook page bringing some allegations against the RCC mayor.

Rangpur City Corporation mayor filed a case against a journalist under the Digital Security Act for making remarks against him on social media.
RCC Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa lodged the case with Kotwali Police Station on Saturday night against Ratan Sarkar, Rangpur correspondent of Somoy Television.
Two days ago, Ratan made a Facebook post against the mayor, bringing some allegations against him.
In the post, he said the mayor could buy some dishonest journalists of Rangpur Press Club and try to kill him. Ratan vowed that he would not let anyone indulge in irregularities.

A 23-year-old engineering graduate driving a Volkswagen Polo hit a cyclist while trying to avert collision with a guardrail on Prince Anwar Shah Road and then knocked down a pedestrian before ramming into a lamp post on Sunday night, police said.
The cyclist, who was barely a few feet from his home, died. The pedestrian, who was standing by the roadside with his wife, had to be hospitalised with multiple wounds.
