Are Some a Little Too Anxious for J&J's COVID Shot?

email article Rates of syncope, or fainting, following administration of Johnson & Johnson s COVID-19 vaccine were significantly higher than rates following influenza vaccination, researchers found. Examining all reports of syncope following Johnson & Johnson vaccination submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), the anxiety-related event occurred at a rate of 8.2 episodes per 100,000 doses, while the rate after influenza vaccination was 0.05 episodes per 100,000, said Anne Hause, PhD, of the CDC, and colleagues, in an early edition of the Five different mass vaccination clinics reported 64 anxiety-related events, including 17 cases of syncope, among 8,624 Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine recipients from April 7 to 9. An anxiety-related event was defined as occurring during the 15-minute post-vaccination observation period. Other anxiety-related symptoms included tachycardia, hyperventilation, dyspnea, chest pain, paresthesia (numbness or tingling),

Coronavirus: What Do We Know About Vaccines and Rare Clotting Disorders?

Every second of your life you are under attack. Bacteria, viruses, spores and more living stuff wants to enter your body and use its resources for itself. The immune system is a powerful army of cells that fights like a T-Rex on speed and sacrifices itself for your survival. Without it you would die in no time. This sounds simple but the reality is complex, beautiful and just awesome. An animation of the immune system.WATCH NOW Doctors recognized that patients who developed a surge of pro-inflammatory immune proteins, also known as a “cytokine storm,” following SARS-CoV-2 infection were often the sickest and at the greatest risk of dying. Researchers have developed a wristwatch-like device that can continuously track cytokine levels through a patient’s sweat, allowing doctors time to proactively administer medications like steroids if they see cytokine levels rising.WATCH NOW

Opinion | Should Rare Side Effects Halt Use of a Vaccine?

To the Editor: Over the past few months, I have been taken aback by the number of conversations I’ve had with educated, worldly friends or acquaintances who have said they won’t get the coronavirus vaccine because of safety concerns or an aversion to vaccines in general. Ultimately, I find their reasoning selfish, privileged and entitled, considering what’s at stake. But the call by federal health agencies to immediately pause use of the Johnson & Johnson single-dose coronavirus vaccine after six recipients, all women, developed a rare blood-clotting disorder and one died will only not fuel their hesitancy but reinforce doubts across America’s demographic spectrum.
