This year s theme was on Ujamaa, or cooperative economics, which is one of the principles of the celebration. Speakers highlighted how people can support minority-owned businesses to build the community.
GREEN BAY - Rania Jones felt alone when she moved from Milwaukee to Green Bay to attend college.
She was the only Black person at her job on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus, and a manager often commented on her hair. Her white peers avoided her. No one has called her a racial slur, she said, but these experiences known as microaggressions are still harmful and add up over time. They were pretty scared to come to me, talk to me, said Jones, now a sophomore and president of the Black Student Union. I kind of felt isolated in many of my classes.
