Activists and voters of Mississippi question Supreme Court ruling against Medical Marijuana

By WJTV May 14, 2021 | 10:39 PM JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Nearly 75-percent of eligible Mississippi voters who cast a ballot in 2020 supported initiative 65. On Friday, the Mississippi Supreme Court overturned the initiative. 12 News spoke to Mississippians to get there reaction to the decision. Those who followed this through from meetings with the secretary of state’s office to cast their ballot on the matter feel shocked their voice did not carry the weight it is worth. Others are confused as to why this had to happen. Through initiative 65, organizations like the Mississippi Medical Marijuana Association hoped to put an end to those suffering from certain medical conditions.

Ex-Miss Gov William Winter, 97, known for education reform, dies

Mississippi Clarion Ledger JACKSON, Miss. – Former Mississippi Gov, William Winter, a crusader for public education and racial harmony, has died. He was 97.  Winter died Friday night at his home in Jackson.  Winter served as governor from 1980 to 1984, and in 1982 ushered the passage of the Education Reform Act, the state s first comprehensive education overhaul. Asked about his legacy by the Clarion-Ledger, Winter said: In general terms, I have tried to use the opportunities I have had to make this a better place than when I came along. We are all in this together.   For more than 50 years, Winter served as a member of the Mississippi State Department of Archives and History’s board of trustees, and he was instrumental in the founding of the Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at the University of Mississippi.
