Former State Rep. Richard Laird died Monday afternoon at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
He represented Randolph, Clay and Chambers counties in Montgomery for 36 years from 1978 to 2014. He was named by his peers as one of the top 15 members of the Alabama House of Representatives for six years and was the recipient of the Governorâs Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.
When he announced his intenÂtion not to run for re-election, he told The Leader, âGod tells us we donât have that many years left. We want to be able to take a few trips without looking over our shoulder . I really, really enjoyed representÂing the people all these years.â
