After pushback from several groups and municipalities, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has rejected a proposal to allow Camp Grayling to operate on state-owned land.
NORTHERN MICHIGAN The Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center is the U.S. Army National Guard’s largest training site, covering roughly 231 square miles.
In a letter to the governor, they highlighted their constituents' concerns, including what they feel is a lack of transparency from the Michigan National Guard and a concern for natural resources, should the proposal move forward.
In the several months since the announcement of the planned expansion, hundreds of nearby residents have expressed concern for how it would affect the environment and local economy.
In a harshly-worded letter, a supervisor in the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy wrote that DNR should reject the Camp Grayling expansion unless the National Guard gets serious about cleaning up PFAS at the base.
