Amarillo officials outline recount schedule for mayoral election

Officials with the city of Amarillo provided a timeline Monday regarding the recount procedure for the recent mayoral election, requested by candidate Claudette Smith. City officials have said previously that this is the first time the city has conducted a recount.  According to previous reporting by the Amarillo Globe-News, Smith’s completed recount petition, along with a $4,500 deposit, was certified Thursday. The petition requested was a manual count of all votes made for the mayoral election.  In unofficial combined election results from Potter and Randall counties, incumbent Ginger Nelson garnered 54% of the total with 10,922 combined votes. Smith, who got the second most votes in the race, was reported as getting 29% of the vote, with 5,861 combined votes. To trigger a runoff election, which would be hosted June 5, Nelson would have to lose 816 votes through the recount.
