Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state agencies to conduct a “prompt and thorough” investigation into gender-affirming care for transgender youth in late February. His directive came just days after the state’s attorney general, Ken Paxton, issued an opinion stating that such “procedures and treatments” could legally constitute “child abuse when performed on minor children.”
"By me being there, for even a split second, a child could think they’ve done something wrong," said a trans man told to investigate a family for being supportive of their trans kid.
Other investigators don’t want to follow an order they believe harms families but worry about the impact of a mass employee exodus on the state’s most vulnerable children.
