Stiever estate bequeathed Saint Mary’s University in Winona more than $5 million the biggest estate gift in university history. Lucille, who died on Jan. 2, 2019, and her husband, Saint Mary’s 1949 alumnus Robert J. Stiever, were a humble couple whose donation provides testimony to their generosity, according to a St. Mary’s statement. Lucille, who was born in La Crosse on June 3, 1931, and Robert lived on her family’s farm in Caledonia, Minn., and in St. Paul, Minn. Robert, who preceded Lucille in death, was an economist and accountant for the USDA Commodity Credit Corporation and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service who retired after 40 years.
