We begin with a summer job for many of us it was working as a lifeguard, poeing lawns or maybe scooping ice cream a parttime summer gig was the first introduction to the workforce, but as kate rogers found, businesses these days have a tough time finding teens hungry for a paycheck. Still hiring is this weeks cover story. Reporter janai hill is kicking off her first summer working in new jersey. The 16year old is making 10. 50, 0. 50 above the minimum wage, serving up cold drinks and fries to customers on the boardwalk. When im not in school over the summer i like to keep myself busy. Reporter hill may enjoy working but the share of teens working or seeking work in june, july and august has been stagnant in recent year. Participation rate in last summer it was 40 , ten years ago it was 50 and in the late 1990s, 60 at the same time, the number of teens enrolled in summer courses has gone up significantly. In 1985, just 10 of teens took courses in july. Last year,
Growing number of inmates are actually defying the orders of Correctional Officers, putting those officers at high risk. And two of those major incidents have occurred just in the past five days. The first incident last week happened here at the low security elmwood facility. An inmate told his family that a correctional deputy severely beat 23yearold Aaron Stewart in the head. Stewart is in jail facing charges of kidnap, burglary and auto theft. In an interview youll see only on abc 7 news, Correctional Officers Union President , amy, said the deputy was the victim. When the officer tried to apply the handcuffs, he turned around and fought with the officer. And because the officer was small stature, this inmate was able to get this officer in a choke hold. Choking him, hes almost out of breath. Reporter besides being the Union President , shes also a lieutenant with 28 years in the sheriffs office, almost all of that time assigned to the main jail. Presently i am helped by canyon senior center, and i would like to one support all the various organizations and people who have come up and asked for should be demanding services and funds from the city that they that we so desperately need and i want to also support a reasonable cost of living raise, whatever you call it because right now if the people that deal with folks like myself dont get a reant cost of living increase then theyre getting a cut and if theyre not around then theyre not able to help people like myself.
