A man accused of gunning down his ex-girlfriend's fiance in North Park carried out the crime in a fit of jealously and obsession, a prosecutor told jurors Monday, but a defense attorney insisted the shooting was committed in self-defense.
Jesse Alvarez, 33, is accused of killing Mario Fierro. who was engaged to Alvarez's ex-girlfriend. Prosecutors say Alvarez lay in wait then ambushed Fierro as he left for work.
Luis Rios, 56, was supposed to be sentenced but this defense attorney asked for a continuance because Rios has moved to Nevada and wants to serve his sentence there.
