Mumbai: 28-year-old doctor ends life in hospital by injecting himself, no suicide note found | Mumbai News

BYL Nair Hospital MUMBAI: A 28-year-old doctor allegedly died by suicide after injecting himself with a concoction of medicines at BYL Nair Hospital on Monday night. Aurangabad resident, Dr Bhimsandesh Tupe, was a first year post-graduate student in the anaesthesia department of the same hospital. This is the second instance of a suicide being reported from the institute in less than two years. Dr Payal Tadvi, a second year gynaecology student, had died by suicide in May 2019, which her family had alleged was driven by casteism. Hospital authorities said Tupe had returned from Aurangabad on Sunday after visiting his father, who had suffered a paralytic attack. He resumed work on Monday and even assisted in four to five surgeries through the day. A police officer said Tupe, who was on duty in the wards, returned to his hostel room on Monday evening after informing colleagues that they could call him whenever needed. However, when calls went unanswered, colleagues broke open the d

Day 2 of vaccination: Lower turnout in Maharashtra, Mumbai manages 50% | Mumbai News

DY Patil Hospital, Nerul MUMBAI: The second day of Covid-19 vaccination in the state on Tuesday saw a lower turnout of healthcare workers opting for the shot, while Mumbai managed to log the same attendance (50%) as the first day on Saturday. This happened despite the health authorities introducing friendly measures such as “walk-in appointments” (in Mumbai) and keeping booths open till 7pm. Moreover, glitches in the Co-WIN software resulted in fewer healthcare workers being called for the shots; at KEM Hospital, Parel, the daily target was reduced to 300 as against 500. The statewide figure dropped from 64% on Day 1 to 52% on Tuesday, with 14,883 healthcare workers (out of 28,500) taking the shot. State health services head, Dr Archana Patil, however, refused to equate the low turnout with vaccine hesitancy. “One cannot deduce hesitancy based on the turnouts of just two days,” she said. Around 7.86 lakh healthcare workers, including 1.3 lakh in Mumbai, are scheduled to

At nine vaccination hubs in Mumbai, FAQ sheets & CoWin app anxiety | Mumbai News

Representative image MUMBAI: With the mammoth immunization drive less than 48 hours away, the vaccination centres within the city’s medical colleges saw hectic last-minute preparations on Thursday. Most centres, where officials were eagerly waiting to download the CoWin application, were disappointed as it didn’t go live till late on Thursday evening. Beneficiaries have still not started getting text messages with date and time of vaccination. Mumbai’s four medical colleges Sion, KEM, Nair and Cooper will handle the bulk of vaccinations. The vaccination centre at Parel’s KEM, set up on the second floor of the new hospital building, saw computers and internet connectivity being installed on Thursday. The entry and exit signages were being earmarked, even as vaccine FAQs sheets were being plastered on the walls. “We are already a designated vaccination centre for yellow fever, and we intend to use that experience,” said professor of community medicine Dr R S Kembhavi

Healthcare workers want to wait till more data on safety, efficacy is available MUMBAI: With Covid-19 vaccines expected to arrive within weeks to a month, many healthcare workers have grown wary of being the first ones to take the shot. Many doctors and nurses TOI spoke to said they would prefer to wait a few months until more data on safety and efficacy was in the public domain. Infectious disease consultant Dr Om Srivastava, also a member of the state Covid taskforce, said he plans to wait till May. “Some vaccine technologies are brand new such as the messenger RNA technology (used in Moderna and Pfizer vaccines). I am certain vaccines will work, but I will decide only after looking at more results,” he said, adding he would rely on masking and physical distancing that have helped so far. Physician Dr Gautam Bhansali, too, said he would wait a few months before deciding when to get vaccinated and on the type of vaccine. Head of one of BMC’s jumbo facilities said, “If giv
