Fasting helps fight diabetes, psychological disorders and other illnesses, say experts

Although Muslims don’t observe fast in the holy month of Ramazan for medical reasons, fasting in the holy month of Ramazan has hundreds of health benefits – both on the physical and mental well-being of people especially those suffering from diseases like diabetes, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, depression and others illnesses, said local and international health experts at a conference on Sunday.
The experts, however, advised people with health issues to seek pre-Ramazan education and medical advice for safe fasting.

There is need for more scientific research in the area of fasting with diabetes, emphasised health experts and religious scholars on Saturday, during a two-day online conference jointly organised by the Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and other institutions.
Speaking on the first day of the ‘International Diabetes and Ramadan Conference, 2021’, the speakers stressed the need for persons having chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary diseases, to consult their doctors and physicians for ensuring safe fasting during Ramazan.
