The arrest of a gang of conmen in the capital who swindled Nepalis by promising to send them to the USA in the guise of Bhutanese refugees has led to the arrest of other high-profile people, including a government secretary and a security advisor to a former home minister.
Preliminary investigation by police revealed that some top bureaucrats and their family members collected money from around 800 people, promising to send them abroad, preferably the United States, as 'Bhutani refugees'.
Indrajit Rai was arrested from his residence on Tuesday morning for allegedly duping people on the pretext of sending them to the United States as Bhutanese refugees.
