The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston scheduled 93,387 pending appointments across its 10 locations in January 2021 compared to 123,586 the same month the previous year, according to data collected from the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Of the total number of appointments in January 2021, 90,481 had a wait time of 30 days or less (96.9%) and 2,906 appointments (3.1%) were scheduled more than 30 days out. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in January 2019 reported wait times for new appointments at VA health care facilities were similar to or better than wait times at private-sector providers between 2014 and 2017.

Enrolled eligible veterans in the Charleston area can schedule appointments at the new North Charleston VA Outpatient Clinic at 6450 Rivers Ave. Veterans who are eligible for the vaccine can call 843-789-6900 to schedule an appointment. The appointment line will be available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
