SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 3 (Xinhua) Unidentified gunmen believed to be militants shot dead a local level leader of India s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Thursday.
The slain leader identified as Rakesh Pandita was attacked on Wednesday evening at a friend s house in Tral area of Pulwama district, about 44 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
A woman was also wounded in the attack.
Pandita was also a municipal councillor of the town.
Reports said militants barged into the house and fired upon Pandita, killing him on the spot and wounding a woman present there.

Pulwama (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 3 (ANI): The body of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Municipal Councillor of Pulwama s Tral Rakesh Pandita was taken for last rites on Thursday. Pandita was killed in firing by three terrorists in Tral Payeen here on Wednesday.
The last rites will be performed today.
Pandita was attacked when he was not accompanied by his two Personal Security Officers (PSOs). Late in the evening today (Wednesday), three unidentified terrorists fired upon Municipal Councillor of Tral Rakesh Pandita. He was a resident of Tral Bala who was visiting his friend at Tral Payeen. Somnath Pandita succumbed to injuries whereas daughter of his friend is seriously wounded, Inspector-General, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar told ANI.
Unidentified terrorists had open fire at BJP councilor Rakesh Pandita in Pulwama's Tral area on Wednesday. Omar Abdullah has tweeted condemning the attack.
