Agra, May 1 (IANS) Determined to clean up the Yamuna, authorities in the Taj Mahal city have arrested 23 cattle owners and washermen for dirtying the river.
The surprise and swift operation - involving the joint staff of five police stations - made the arrests Saturday under various sections of the Water Pollution Act of 1974.
Police said the arrested people - 18 'dhobis' (washermen) and five cattle owners - could be fined and sentenced up to seven years in jail.

Greater Noida: A 32-year-old man, who went to repair an air conditioner (AC) at a former IAS officer’s home in Greenwoods society in Greater Noida on Tuesday night, lost consciousness while he was at work and died later in hospital.
According to the police, Bhupal Singh a resident of Bulandshahr worked at a neighbourhood AC repair shop and lived in a rented home in Greater Noida. “Bhupal had gone to repair the AC along with Mobbin and Nitesh at Rajiv Rautela’s home. “His body has been sent for autopsy and a report is awaited,” a police officer said.
