champion surfer mick fanning says he is totally fine after fighting off a shark during a competition in south africa. after getting smacked around a bit and after hitting back to the shark also, fanning swam for his life, was picked up by rescuers. those are some of our top stories on this monday, july 20th. announcer: from abc news this is world news now with t.j. holmes and reena ninan. well good morning, everyone. we begin this half hour with the extreme weather in much of the country. heavy rain in southern california caused flooding and mudslides, washed away an interstate highway bridge near the arizona border and caused rare rainout baseball games. it was the first rainout for the los angeles for the angels in 20 years. the anaheim angels out there. but this wasn t the only area hit hard this weekend. we get more from abc s rob marciano. reporter: a wild weekend of deadly weather across the country. in the southwest, leftovers from hurricane dolores causing this. o
a second. here s the flooding concerns across the south. this is the spreading. see a couple of red boxes across the gulf including places like pensacola and destin. those are tornado warnings. we have that to deal with. go up to far new england who had all the ramifications from irene last week, those are flash flood watches in effect right now. a lot of this moisture that s out there with lee is going to spread up in the cross parts of new england again. three days from now, we ll be talking about possibly another four or five inches of rain falling and they can t take that because the ground is so completely saturated and they ve had that flooding. it s not going to be looking like a flooding event like we saw with irene but it s going to exacerbate the situation and if you re dealing with the cleanup, it s going to make that a slower process. a lot of people are going to get a lot of rain in the next few days and still dealing with wind and the storm that doesn t want to budge. t
