Apr. 21 It s been a tough past year, said Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Woodards will be giving her annual State of the City Address virtually again this year in a four-part series airing the first four Mondays in the month of May. Last year s State of the City Address was also virtual. As we emerge from a year of unprecedented and unforeseen hardship and embrace the need for innovation, compassion and change I m going to focus on how we lift and strengthen our economy, our neighbors and our community as a whole, Woodards said in a news release Tuesday. But I am not charting our path forward alone. As a city, we are transforming our destiny together.

Alicia Mathurin Earns Martin Luther King, Jr Community Lifetime Service Award

Annie Wright Schools announced that Alicia Mathurin, Director of Community Engagement, has been selected to receive the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Lifetime Service Award by Tacoma’s City Events and Recognitions Committee. The Tacoma’s City Events and Recognitions Committee selection committee shared that Alicia has received this prestigious award by “honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy in two ways: Creating a space for people of color – specifically women – to gather and talk about racial issues and social justice; and also by being a co-founder of the Tacoma Community Market where vendors of color are showcased and can be celebrated. Those two contributions, as well as her leadership role at Annie Wright, means that she is a pillar of our community as well as a catalyst for new ways of teaching students about diversity.”

I hope you will join me for my annual in-district Pierce County Council meeting, which will be held Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020 at 5 p.m. At the meeting we will hear updates from: Town of Steilacoom Mayor Ron Lucas City of Lakewood Mayor Don Anderson City of DuPont Mayor Ron Frederick Anderson Island Citizens Advisory Board Chairman Dave Albertson There will also be an update from the Performance Audit Committee with a report on the county’s interpreter services study, facilitated by Bill Vetter, senior legislative analyst. Under the Pierce County Charter, the County Council holds at least one meeting per year in each of its seven council districts. This is done to make us more accessible to the residents we represent, and to identify topics of interest for our respective districts.
