Ms Ram said high sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) rates and low condom use was still an issue. “The recent Global AIDS monitoring report from Fiji shows that in men who have sex with men (MSM), only 24 per cent used a condom at their last sexual encounter,” Ms Ram said. “There is a general perception in Fiji that the use of condoms reduces pleasure, however, when used correctly is the contrary.

Picture: SUPPLIED/ADRA FIJI Twenty-four households devastated by STC Yasa in Nasigasiga Village, Macuata received cash assistance of $100 each last Saturday. While handing over the assistance, European Union ambassador for Pacific, Sujiro Seam said the cash was for purchasing urgently needed products. The assistance was part of $2 million of rapid humanitarian assistance by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) to communities affected by STC Yasa in Fiji.

Facing Intersecting Crises: LGBTIQ+ Resilience in Fiji

(Photo courtesy of the Rainbow Pride Foundation) ​ The climate justice conversation lacks sufficient representation and voices from marginalized groups, such as people living with disabilities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) people; and migrants and refugees. An intersectional approach to the impacts of environmental and climate crises is imperative to highlight how different marginalized groups define, relate, and respond to their realities. Underrepresentation and underreporting of those groups poses an issue for purposive, inclusive, and intersectional public policy. Hence, disaster preparedness and harm reduction, especially for marginalized communities, are fundamental areas which require investment.
