For me, a key part of writing these weekly reviews is breaking down the plot and themes of each episode. Now, I m trying my best, dear readers, but more so than even the worst of the episodes that preceded it, “The Princesses Strike Back” really does feel like a bunch of random scenes that were haphazardly slapped together with no rhyme or reason to speak of. I d be lying if I told you that I fully understood what was even going on, by the end of things, but I guess I ll give it a shot?
We open in the present, with Mr. Kirin bumping into Sota and his little family to ominously inquire about Towa s whereabouts. Here is where I will be as fair as I can possibly be and highlight the one moment of the episode I liked, where Sota blames Towa s extended absence on a medley of random illnesses, just like Kagome s folks did back in the day for her. That was a cute callback, and what I wouldn t give for a version of

Set in feudal Japan, half-demon twins Towa and Setsuna are separated from each other during a forest fire. While desperately searching for her younger sister, Towa wanders into a mysterious tunnel that sends her into present-day Japan, where she is found by Kagome Higurashi’s brother, Sota, and his family. Ten years later, the tunnel that connects the two eras had reopened, allowing Towa to be reunited with Setsuna, who is now a demon slayer working for Kohaku. I got a bad feeling about Double-Edged Moroha from the moment it started. You d think, given that last week s episode randomly decided to break away from the story to have a flashback story time with Riku, that the show would take even a scant minute or two to establish things like context and pacing: Where the girls are. Why they are there. Some vague idea about how long it has been since that godforsaken misadventure with the Rapey Mountain Arsonist. You know, the simple stuff that helps the audience figure out what the hell is going on. But no, it doesn t even take a couple of seconds for
