last sunday. dozens of families have lost their homes to wildfires. in oklahoma city alone, fires destroyed 25 homes just this week. and in texas, crews are still battling 14 separate wildfires. they have been making some progress, but a weather system is expected to bring high winds to texas to tomorrow. and that could turn the embers back into flames. politics and sarah palin s latest appearance in the critical early voting state of iowa. the former alaska governor and former vp candidate was a keynote speaker at a tea party rally. she didn t use the rally to declare her presidential bid but she definitely sounded like a candidate. watch. candidate obama didn t have a record while he was in office, but president obama sure does and that s why we re here today. candidate obama, he pledged to fundamentally transform america and for all the failures and broken promises, that s the one thing he delivered on. we have transformed from a country of hope, to one of anxiety. t
if you had to get out very quickly and where you going to go. rick: what do you think about these reports that this will not just be a coastal event, but that a lot of areas inland will be affected by this as well? we could be talking about and we were just discussing the big cities in the northeast that could be affected. this could be a very big event for people all over the northeast. i think it s highly likely we re going to see a lot of wind and a lot of rain up and down the east coast. that wind and rain are going to extend for hundreds and hundreds of miles. if you look at hurricane ike which was the last severe land-falling hurricane in this country, 2008, it hit coastal texas, but there were hurricane-strength winds all the way into ohio where there were a billion and a half dollars of loss. so we re going to see a lot of wind and water, and people need to prepare for that. rick: you know, we always hear these folks who do not want to leave their homes, they want to ride i
north carolina first gets hit on saturday, and then somewhere in new england after that, even in areas that don t get a direct hit though, there s the flooding damage, wind damage and power outages, a major pain. you re looking at live pictures from folly beach in south carolina. residents keeping an eye on irene. it could pass by though. they haven t been told to leave though. they are urged to take precautions. evacuations are under way though in the north carolina outer banks. the governor declaring a state of emergency ahead of the hurricane. many areas are accessible only by ferry so voluntary evacuations have now become mandatory. residents and tourists told to get out today. we have the website posted with where there are shelters. there are sheltering options and several counties. wilson is one. we have those on our website and the local emergency management have them published in that data, and then obviously on sunday you ll hear an immediate response from the loc
washington monument. let s get a check of weather with msnbc meteorologist bill karins. good morning, bill. summer thunderstorms, sometimes they produce tornadoes. had one yesterday. another one that went through the downtown area. this was louisville, kentucky. look at this thing. it looked like a beast at this point. thankfully, it didn t that strong for that long. it did damage areas around churchill downs. a lot of horses, they say were safe, but the barns damaged. they cancelled the races for today. very rare event at churchill downs. showers and storms out there this morning rolling through central new york and near scranton, pennsylvania, thunderstorms early today. today is going to be just like yesterday. most of the day will be dry, but later this afternoon we ll watch strong storms roll in through possibility of damaging wind and hail with those storms. that s mostly everyone in the eastern half of the country. middle of the country, willie, is just okay. kind of cool aro
