street is completely flooded. most of these homes have been evacuated. a few people are hanging in here, for example, the people who live here have boats ready to get out. at this point they don t have power. there s no heat in these homes. there have been rescue trucks that have come through here and offered people rides out, but people want to stay and protect their property. in the state of new jersey, the government has declared an emergency for many areas of the state. they are telling people to be prepared, to be ready to evacuate. some of these people are staying. it s a serious situation. they re watching this closely. the expectation is that it s going to rise even further. we re getting rain intermittently during the day, but the rain could probably rise several feet in the next few days, perhaps approaching record levels. a serious situation, people watching this closely and trying to deal with these very deep and potentially dangerous floodwaters. back to you, thomas. ron
time for this holiday weekend. our senior correspondent alan chernhoff is on montauk on long island. describe what you re seeing. wolf, the surf is very, very intense. have a look at waves out there. all afternoon we ve been watching the power of mother nature and it is absolutely incredible. some of those waves well over 10 feet high. no doubt about that. the wind picking up right now as well. we ve had rain intermittently. it stopped just a few moments ago. the story here out in montauk right at the tip of long island is right behind me. those waves and the tourists have been coming out here, dozens, all afternoon, just watching that scene. in terms of emergency preparations, well, there are plenty. a lot of residents here have boarded up their windows. some haven t bothered to do so. they ve put the furniture inside. the patio furniture.
